Children do love to dress up in pretty Holy Communion dresses and boys suits and have fun but the celebration of a child’s First Holy Communion is first and foremost a very important day in the life of a Catholic child, when a child first receives the sacrament of the Eucharist. Children are usually about the age of seven or eight when they receive their First Holy Communion as this is the time when it is considered they can think and reason for themselves. A child must have been baptised prior to being able to receive First Holy Communion.
Usually children attend preparation sessions from around September/October in readiness for the event the following May. Often there are services for Presentation of Icon and Presentation of Bible and the child will make their First Reconciliation some time before receiving their First Holy Communion and this would be followed a short time later by The Going Forth Mass.
So First Communion is an important occasion for Roman Catholic families and it is a great time for families to gather and often have a party to celebrate. Special children’s clothing is usually worn and that is where we can help you. Holy Communion dresses are often white to symbolize purity although in some places ivory dresses may be worn. Do check guidelines issued by your Church prior to making any purchases. Generally girls tend to wear white ankle or the now popular tea length girls dresses. Often a veil and/or headdress are worn along with white gloves, which can be long or short. In some places the whole issue of buying a Holy Communion dress is becoming increasingly expensive and extravagant so here at The Childrens Store, we aim to bring you good value for money, excellent quality childrens clothes. I am Catholic myself and I remember my dress well; it was very short and I had long white socks on. My nephew celebrated his Holy Communion last year and thing haven’t changed much, apart from the length of the girls dresses! When ‘I was a lass’ our clothes were often made for us, in fact my mum made mine - and we passed them down to younger sisters or friends and we did get to wear our Holy Communion dress again at the annual Blessed Sacrament procession. I know that is still the practice nowadays in some places, so the girls dresses and suits do get more than one ‘showing off’, in addition to all the trying on and dressing up they are enjoyed for! Boys tend to wear smart trousers, a white shirt and a red tie, my nephew looked so smart and handsome. In Scotland, we understand it is traditional for boys to wear a kilt for the ceremony.
Gifts are usually given to children and often this will include gifts of a religious nature, such as rosary beads, prayer books, bibles, religious statues or icons.
We hope we can help you with your purchase of your daughter’s Holy Communion Dress and sons clothing outfit. To complete the outfit view our range of children’s bolero jackets, cardigans, tiaras, headdresses, white gloves, bags, frilly socks, white tights and children’s Holy Communion veils.
